Achalasia happens when the nerves of the esophagus are damaged or do not function properly. This causes the food to remain in the esophagus, can ferment, and come back up in the mouth. Achalasia dilation is an endoscopic surgery done with the help of a balloon that opens up the tight lower sphincter of patients with Achalasia, thus helping food passage into the stomach.
