Appendectomy

The surgery done to remove the appendix is termed an appendectomy. It may be needed in cases of inflammation or severe infection. An appendectomy does not hamper any physiologic function because the appendix is a vestigial organ. Laparoscopic appendectomy is very commonly done under spinal anaesthesia with a fast recovery time. A surgical incision is made in the lower part of the abdomen & the appendix is removed. Self-dissolved stitches are used to seal up the incision.
