Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory

The cardiac catheterization laboratory, commonly known as the cath lab, is a specialized facility provided by the Cardiology Department of Aster Whitefield Hospital that is highly equipped for both diagnostic and interventional procedures related to the heart and blood vessels. It serves as a vital component of our cardiology department, providing essential tools and technologies to aid in the evaluation and treatment of various cardiac conditions.

Some key features and procedures associated with our cardiac catheterization laboratory include:

Catheter-directed thrombolysis: This procedure involves the use of specialized catheters to deliver clot-dissolving medications directly to the site of a blood clot in the coronary arteries. By administering thrombolytic agents through the catheter, the clot can be dissolved, restoring blood flow and minimizing damage to the heart muscle. Catheter-directed thrombolysis for deep vein thrombosis (DVT): Similar to coronary artery thrombolysis, this technique utilizes catheters to deliver thrombolytic agents to dissolve blood clots in the deep veins of the legs or other affected areas. It helps alleviate symptoms, reduce the risk of complications, and improve blood flow.

Fractional flow reserve (FFR): FFR is a diagnostic technique used in our Cath lab to assess the severity of coronary artery blockages. It involves the insertion of a pressure-sensing catheter into the coronary arteries to measure the pressure changes and evaluate the functional significance of the blockages. FFR helps guide decisions regarding the need for coronary interventions such as stenting or bypass surgery.
Digital imaging systems for angiography and fluoroscopy: These systems provide real-time X-ray imaging of the heart and blood vessels, allowing cardiologists to visualize and assess the anatomy, blood flow, and any abnormalities or blockages.

Hemodynamic monitoring equipment: This equipment helps monitor vital parameters such as blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen levels, and cardiac output during procedures. It provides crucial information on the patient's hemodynamic status, guiding the decision-making process.

Advanced imaging technology: Our lab is well equipped with advanced imaging modalities such as intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and optical coherence tomography (OCT). IVUS uses catheter-based ultrasound probes to provide detailed images of the inside of the blood vessels, aiding in the assessment of plaque burden and vessel dimensions. OCT employs light waves to generate high-resolution cross-sectional images of the vessel walls, offering valuable insights into plaque characteristics and vessel integrity.
