A lumbar puncture, also known as a spinal tap, involves collecting a small amount of cerebrospinal fluid from the lower back.
CSF surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord. Examination of this fluid can provide important information in selected neurological conditions.
Lumbar puncture may be considered when evaluating conditions such as meningitis, encephalitis, inflammatory neurological disorders, certain autoimmune conditions and other selected diseases.
The procedure is performed using appropriate sterile precautions and clinical monitoring.
