Spine Care

Spine care involves the diagnosis and treatment of a broad range of conditions affecting the neck, back, spinal discs, facet joints, nerves, and the muscles and ligaments that support the spinal column. Spinal problems may develop gradually because of ageing, disc degeneration, and prolonged mechanical stress, or may occur suddenly as a result of injury, spinal deformity, or conditions that compress the surrounding nerves.

When it is recommended
Spine treatment may be required when neck or back pain becomes persistent, worsening, or is associated with additional symptoms such as pain radiating into the arms or legs, numbness, tingling, weakness, difficulty walking, or noticeably restricted movement. Common conditions include herniated or slipped discs, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, other degenerative spinal conditions, spinal deformities such as scoliosis, and traumatic spinal injuries. Many patients can initially be managed successfully without surgery. However, a surgical assessment may become necessary when symptoms remain severe despite a genuine trial of appropriate conservative treatment, or when there is evidence of significant nerve compression, progressive muscle weakness, spinal instability, worsening deformity, or another clear structural problem that requires direct intervention.=

About the procedure

Non‑surgical treatment may include a combination of medication, physiotherapy, posture and ergonomic correction, activity modification, targeted strengthening exercises, and selected image‑guided injections to reduce inflammation and pain around irritated nerves. The precise treatment plan is always shaped by your specific diagnosis, symptom pattern, physical examination findings, and imaging results. When surgery is genuinely indicated, procedures may include microdiscectomy, decompression surgery, laminectomy, spinal fusion, and selected minimally invasive spine techniques. Microdiscectomy may be used to remove the small portion of a disc that is pressing on a nerve root, while decompression procedures aim more broadly to relieve pressure around affected neural structures. Fusion procedures may be considered specifically when spinal stability itself needs to be restored, such as after significant slippage or instability. At Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine in Areekode, spine care is carefully planned according to each patient’s specific condition, symptom severity, and functional requirements in daily life, with the overall goal of identifying and addressing the underlying cause of symptoms, relieving pain, and supporting a real, lasting improvement in mobility and day‑to‑day function.
