Trauma and Fracture Care

Trauma and fracture care involves the assessment and treatment of injuries to bones, joints, and the surrounding soft tissues, most commonly caused by road accidents, falls, sports injuries, workplace incidents, and other forms of physical trauma. Fractures themselves can range enormously in severity, from simple, stable breaks that heal predictably with minimal intervention, to complex injuries involving multiple bone fragments, damage to joint surfaces, and associated injury to nearby soft tissues, nerves, or blood vessels.

When it is recommended
Orthopaedic assessment is required whenever an injury results in significant pain, swelling, visible deformity, instability, restricted movement, or any suspicion of underlying bone damage. Immediate evaluation is particularly important for open fractures where the bone has broken through the skin, severe visible deformities, patients with multiple injuries, any suspected involvement of nerves or blood vessels, and high‑energy trauma such as major road traffic accidents or significant falls from height. The appropriate treatment for any given fracture depends on a combination of factors, including its precise location and pattern, the degree of displacement, its overall stability, the condition of the surrounding soft tissues, your age and general health, and your individual functional requirements for work or daily life.

About the procedure

Stable, well‑aligned fractures may be managed conservatively with casts, splints, or braces to immobilise the affected area and allow the bone to heal naturally over the following weeks. However, when a fracture is significantly displaced, unstable, involves a joint surface, or cannot be reliably maintained in the correct position using non‑surgical treatment alone, surgery may be recommended to achieve and maintain proper alignment. Surgical fixation techniques can involve plates, screws, intramedullary nails, wires, or external fixation devices, selected according to the specific fracture pattern and location. Complex fractures involving extensive soft‑tissue injury may require a staged approach to treatment, with carefully coordinated care over multiple stages to optimise the final outcome and reduce complication risk. A closed or open reduction may be performed first to restore the broken bone to an appropriate anatomical position before it is either immobilised in a cast or fixed surgically. Follow‑up X‑rays and regular clinical assessments are then used throughout the recovery period to monitor ongoing alignment and confirm that healing is progressing as expected. At Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine in Areekode, fracture management is always planned according to the specifics of the individual injury rather than a generic protocol, with the consistent aim of achieving stable, reliable healing and restoring useful, functional movement as fully as possible.
