Angioplasty

Coronary angioplasty is performed to restore blood flow through narrowed or blocked coronary arteries using a balloon and, when required, a stent.

Why and when it is recommended

It is recommended for patients with significant coronary artery blockages causing chest pain (angina), or during a heart attack to urgently reopen a blocked artery and limit damage to the heart muscle.

How it differs from conventional surgery

Unlike open-heart bypass surgery, angioplasty is performed through a small catheter inserted into the wrist or groin, avoiding major incisions and general anesthesia, resulting in a much shorter recovery period.

Life after the procedure

Patients typically recover within a few days and are advised on antiplatelet medication, cardiac rehabilitation, and lifestyle modification to maintain long-term artery health
