Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy helps patients manage everyday activities after an illness, injury, surgery, or neurological condition. These activities may include dressing, bathing, eating, grooming, writing, cooking, using household objects, studying, working, or participating in family life. The focus is on helping the patient do as much as possible independently and safely.

A person may regain basic strength but still struggle with practical tasks. For example, they may be able to move the arm but find it difficult to button a shirt, hold a spoon, use a mobile phone, write, or prepare a meal. Occupational therapy focuses on these real-life challenges.

Why and when it is recommended

Occupational therapy may be recommended after stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, hand injuries, fractures, burns, major surgery, or prolonged hospitalisation. It can help improve hand function, grip, fine motor control, coordination, attention, memory, sensory awareness, and self-care skills.

Children with developmental delays may need support with play, handwriting, classroom activities, sensory processing, communication, and daily routines. Older adults with arthritis, weakness, balance problems, or neurological conditions may require alternative methods to complete personal and household activities.

Therapy may also be helpful when a person is preparing to return to work or school. The treatment can focus on job-related tasks, handwriting, computer use, tool handling, concentration, endurance, and safe movement.

Treatment

The therapist begins by discussing the patient’s normal routine and identifying activities that have become difficult. Treatment may include hand exercises, coordination tasks, dressing practice, writing activities, memory exercises, sensory work, task sequencing, and training with assistive equipment.

The therapist may also demonstrate safer ways to complete activities. A patient with one weak hand may learn how to use the stronger hand more effectively while continuing to improve the affected side. A person with poor balance may be taught safer methods for bathing, dressing, and moving around the home.

Recovery and follow-up

Practical changes may be suggested, including grab bars, shower chairs, raised toilet seats, dressing aids, adapted cutlery, or changes in furniture placement. These recommendations depend on the patient’s home and daily routine.

Family members may learn how to provide support without completing every task for the patient. Follow-up visits help measure progress and introduce new goals as abilities improve. The overall aim is greater confidence, safety, and participation at home, work, school, and in the community.
