Speech Therapy

Speech therapy helps people who have difficulty speaking, understanding language, using their voice, or swallowing safely. Communication and swallowing problems can affect confidence, nutrition, social interaction, and quality of life. Treatment is planned according to the patient’s age, diagnosis, abilities, and personal goals.

Some patients may want to speak more clearly after a stroke. Others may need help finding words, understanding conversation, using their voice, or eating and drinking without coughing. Children may require support for delayed speech, unclear pronunciation, or difficulties expressing themselves.

Why and when it is recommended

Speech therapy may be recommended after a stroke, traumatic brain injury, head and neck cancer treatment, or neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis. Patients may experience slurred speech, reduced voice strength, difficulty finding words, problems understanding language, or changes in reading and writing.

Swallowing difficulty may cause coughing during meals, choking, a wet or gurgly voice, food remaining in the mouth, long mealtimes, weight loss, dehydration, or repeated chest infections. These symptoms need attention because food or liquid may enter the airway instead of passing safely into the food pipe.

Children may benefit from therapy when speech is delayed, difficult to understand, or not developing as expected. Early support may help improve communication at home, school, and in social situations.

Treatment

The speech-language pathologist may assess speech clarity, language, voice, oral movement, chewing, and swallowing. Treatment may include pronunciation exercises, language activities, voice training, oral-motor exercises, memory tasks, communication strategies, and swallowing exercises.

Patients may be taught how to change their posture, eating speed, bite size, food texture, or drinking method. Some people may use communication boards, gestures, writing, or electronic devices while spoken communication improves.

Additional swallowing assessments may be recommended when the therapist needs more information about how food and liquid move through the mouth and throat.

Recovery and follow-up

Home practice is often an important part of progress. Family members can help by allowing extra time for communication, reducing background noise, and following safe mealtime instructions.

Progress may include clearer speech, improved word retrieval, stronger voice, better understanding, fewer coughing episodes, or the ability to manage more food and liquid textures. Follow-up visits help review communication, swallowing safety, diet recommendations, and the need for continued therapy.
