Oral Cancer

Oral cancer is a type of cancer that develops in tissues of the mouth, including the lips, tongue, gums, inner cheeks, floor of the mouth, and other areas of the oral cavity. Early assessment of persistent oral changes is important because treatment options can depend on the location and extent of the disease.

Treatment is planned according to the cancer type, stage, location, spread, and overall health of the patient.

Why and When Is Oral Cancer Treatment Recommended?

Evaluation should be considered for persistent or unexplained symptoms such as:

  • A mouth ulcer that does not heal
  • A persistent lump or thickened area
  • White or red patches
  • Unexplained bleeding
  • Persistent mouth pain
  • Difficulty chewing or swallowing
  • Difficulty moving the tongue or jaw
  • Persistent numbness of the lip or mouth
  • An unexplained neck lump

These symptoms can have several causes and do not necessarily indicate cancer, but persistent changes require professional evaluation.

How Is Oral Cancer Diagnosed and Treated?

Diagnosis may involve clinical examination, imaging, and biopsy. Once cancer is confirmed, the treatment plan depends on the stage and location.

Surgery may be used to remove the tumour and, when necessary, affected lymph nodes or nearby tissues. Depending on the diagnosis, additional treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, or other systemic treatments may be recommended.

What Should Patients Expect During Treatment?

Treatment experiences vary significantly. Surgery may require a period of recovery and rehabilitation, particularly when the tumour affects structures involved in speech, swallowing, or chewing.

The care team may provide nutritional, speech, pain-management, and rehabilitation support when required.

Multidisciplinary Treatment

Oral cancer treatment may involve surgeons, medical oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, anaesthesiologists, and supportive-care professionals working together.

The treatment plan is individualised with the aim of controlling the cancer while considering important functions such as speech, swallowing, chewing, and overall quality of life.
