Plasma Exchange
Plasma exchange, or plasmapheresis, is a treatment used in selected severe immune-mediated neurological conditions.
The procedure involves removing plasma from the patient's blood and replacing it with an appropriate replacement fluid. The aim is to reduce circulating antibodies or other substances contributing to immune-mediated disease.
It may be considered in conditions such as severe Guillain–Barré syndrome, myasthenic crisis and selected autoimmune neurological disorders.
Plasma exchange requires appropriate monitoring and may be coordinated with critical care and transfusion medicine teams when necessary.
