Aster MIMS Calicut has successfully performed the state's first FlowTriever Catheter Embolectomy, giving a new lease of life to a 31-year-old man from Wayanad who was suffering from a severe pulmonary embolism caused by large blood clots in his lungs. The procedure was successfully carried out by the medical team led by Dr. Salman Salahudeen, Head of the Department of Interventional Cardiology.
FlowTriever Catheter Embolectomy is an advanced, minimally invasive procedure that enables the direct removal of blood clots from the pulmonary arteries without the need for major surgery. During the procedure, a specially designed catheter is inserted through the main vein in the patient's thigh and guided through the heart into the arteries of the lungs, where even large blood clots can be safely extracted.
One of the major advantages of this technique is that it removes the clot mechanically without the need for clot-dissolving drugs, significantly reducing the risk of major bleeding complications.
The multidisciplinary team involved in the procedure included Dr. Sudeep Koshi, Dr. Sandeep Mohanan, Dr. Jayesh Bhaskar, and Dr. Bijoy Karunakaran from the Department of Cardiology, along with specialists from the Departments of Anaesthesia and Critical Care.
This marks the first successful use of the FlowTriever Catheter Embolectomy technology in Kerala, representing a significant milestone in the treatment of life-threatening pulmonary embolism in the state.
Speaking at a press conference, Dr. Salman Salahudeen, Dr. Jayesh Bhaskar, Dr. Sudeep Koshi, Dr. Gopinath Mampallikkalam, and S. Anu shared details of the procedure and highlighted its potential to transform the management of pulmonary embolism through minimally invasive treatment.
