Aster MIMS Calicut has successfully performed Kerala’s first heart transplant surgery of the year, reaffirming its leadership in advanced cardiac and organ transplant care.
The life-saving surgery was carried out on January 4, using the heart donated by Vipin, a native of Wayanad who was declared brain-dead on January 3. The recipient, Shahul Hameed, a 32-year-old resident of Kunnamangalam, Kozhikode, was suffering from advanced heart failure and required frequent hospital admissions.
With no alternative treatment options, the medical team at Aster MIMS Calicut registered him under the Kerala government’s Mrithasanjeevani organ donation scheme. Following the consent of the donor’s family, the heart transplant was successfully completed.
The surgery was led by Dr. Bijoy Jacob, Head of the Cardiothoracic Department, with support from a multidisciplinary team of cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiologists, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, nursing staff, and technicians.
Shahul Hameed has recovered well post-surgery and expressed his gratitude to the Aster MIMS Calicut medical team and the donor’s family for giving him a second chance at life.
Aster MIMS Calicut continues to be a leading centre for heart transplant surgery and advanced cardiac care in Kerala.
