In this video, Dr. Yogesh K, Senior Consultant - Orthopedics at Aster Whitefield Hospital, discusses the rising prevalence of shoulder injuries in young adults and identifies the most common causes and treatments.
Common Causes of Shoulder Pain in Young Adults
Muscle Strains: Often caused by overusing the shoulder without a proper warm-up or using improper techniques during sports.
Dislocations and Instability: Patients may feel as though their shoulder is "slipping out" and going back into place.
Rotator Cuff Tears: This involves damage to the four small but critical muscles beneath the deltoid that facilitate shoulder rotation and movement. These tears can occur due to sports, heavy exercise, or road traffic accidents
Inflammatory Arthritis: Conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis can lead to significant shoulder pain
Referred Pain: Pain that originates from a disc prolapse in the neck can often be felt in the shoulder area
Diagnosis and Treatment
The process begins with a clinical examination, followed by an X-ray. An MRI is typically required to get a detailed view of the internal structures. Treatment Options include Physiotherapy and Surgery. Most shoulder issues in young adults can be managed through physical therapy. Surgical intervention may be necessary for serious internal injuries or significant muscle tears.
