Kozhikode: Aster MIMS Kozhikode today announced the launch of its upgraded Neurosciences and Ophthalmology departments to provide an enhanced treatment experience for patients. These augmented and modernized key departments were inaugurated earlier today by the Respected Mayor Thottathil Raveendran of the Kozhikode Municipal Corporation in the presence of Dr. Azad Moopen, Chairman & Managing Director, Aster DM Healthcare.
The Department of Neurosciences now covers the specialities of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Interventional Neuroradiology. The Neurosurgery department will be open round the clock, catering to surgeries ranging from the simple to the most complicated. Modern technology in the ICU and the operation theatre includes the latest Neuro-navigation technology for precise brain surgery and technology to precisely monitor the intra-cranial pressure using parenchymal electrodes to examine traumatic brain injury patients will also be available in the department. The Department will also have one of the most technologically advanced operating microscopes available in the world called Pentero (manufactured by Karl Zeiss) with integrated angiogram and tumour fluorescence – a first of its kind in North Malabar. The state-of-the art Cavitron ultrasonic surgical aspirator (CUSA) now enables surgeons to remove unresectable tumors in the brain that cannot be removed through conventional surgery, while Neuro-endoscopy technology enables minimally invasive skull surgery. Advanced Neurophysiology lab with digital EEG, Video EEG monitoring, nerve conduction study, EMG, evoked potentials. The department will also provide round the clock facilities to treat cerebral stroke patients who will require emergency interventions.

The Department of Ophthalmology has gained new vision with the latest technology, new doctors and a secure and personal treatment plan for eye-related ailments. Precision eye-testing and evaluation is now available through the latest equipment that includes Pentacam, a sophisticated multiple purpose device for evaluating all aspects of the cornea; the Optical coherence tomography (OCT), a non-invasive imaging test that gives cross-section pictures of the retina and is useful in diagnosing many eye conditions including disorders of the optic nerve; and Fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA) used to examine the tiny blood vessels in the eye.
