Kozhikode:Hospitals and nursing homes in the state are in a hubbub with the recent Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) mandate to all empanelled healthcare providers to meet the pre-accreditation entry level standards laid down by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH). The IRDA has given its empanelled hospitals two years to obtain the entry-level certification. Since NABH accreditation was voluntary, only a few hospitals had chosen to opt for the quality certification. With only 403 hospitals across India and only 29 hospitals in Kerala being NABH accredited*, there is likely to be a big rush to get accredited. To guide hospitals on the requirements and the process of accreditation, the NABH POI (Programme of Implementation) workshop was recently held at Aster MIMS, Kozhikode.

As the first multi-specialty hospital in the country to gainNABH accreditation in 2006, Aster MIMS has the unique experience of being NABH accredited for the longest period of time having kept up the accreditation through the renewal process each year. Dr. Abraham Mammen, Sr. Consultant & HOD, Dept of Pediatric and Neonatal Surgery at Aster MIMS is also a NABH Assessor.

Dr. Mammen said, ‘With the new mandate by IRDAI, many hospitals now want to learn about the process. The workshop was organised to arm these organisations with the requisite knowledge about the various aspects of NABH accreditation, so that they can start ensuring that their facilities are to the standards required for the accreditation.’

Along with Dr. Mammen, Capt.AjithaNair, Principal Assessor, NABH also spoke on the NABHProgramme of Implementation workshop. The workshop comprehensively covered all aspects of the NABH accreditation including overview of the procedure, facility management and safety requirements including the essential infrastructure needs and references to other standards like BIS and National Building Code. The session on statutory laws and regulations with national and international guidelines and key objective elements to be met for the accreditation was followed by a panel discussion allowing the participants to voice their concerns and seek clarifications.

Dr. Rahul Menon, CEO, Aster MIMS said, ‘Being the first hospital in the country to get NABH accreditation gives us a responsibility to enlighten others. As healthcare providers, our focus remains on patient safety and quality healthcare as a continuing process. We look forward to many more healthcare providers taking the benefit of these workshops as they work towards NABH accreditation.
