Hypertension

Renal hypertension, also known as renovascular hypertension, is a form of high blood pressure caused by narrowing (stenosis) or blockage of the arteries that supply blood to the kidneys (renal arteries). When the blood flow to the kidneys is reduced due to this narrowing, the kidneys mistakenly perceive it as low blood pressure and respond by releasing hormones such as renin, which triggers the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). This results in increased production of angiotensin II, a substance which is responsible for constriction of blood vessels and raises blood pressure.

Renal hypertension is often resistant to standard blood pressure medications and requires targeted treatment to address the underlying kidney artery blockage. It is commonly associated with conditions like atherosclerosis (plaque buildup in arteries) or fibromuscular dysplasia (abnormal artery growth).

Causes of Renal Hypertension

  1. Narrowing of kidney arteries (renal artery stenosis)
  2. Chronic kidney disease
  3. Hormonal imbalances affecting kidney function
  4. Inflammation of kidney tissues

Symptoms of Renal Hypertension

Renal hypertension often does not show symptoms until it becomes severe. However, some warning signs include

  • High blood pressure that is difficult to control
  • Fatigue and confusion
  • Swelling in the legs and feet
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain or headaches
  • Reduced kidney function detected in blood tests

Why Choose Aster Hospitals for Renal Hypertension Treatment?

At Aster Hospitals, our nephrologists and urologists specialize in diagnosing and managing renal hypertension using advanced tests like blood tests, urine analysis, Doppler ultrasound, and CT angiography. Based on the diagnosis, we offer medications to lower blood pressure and protect kidney function, along with lifestyle changes such as diet plans, weight management, and exercise recommendations. For severe cases, we provide angioplasty and stenting to open narrowed kidney arteries. In cases of advanced kidney failure, dialysis or kidney transplant may be necessary. We aim to deliver personalized treatment to help patients manage blood pressure effectively and maintain kidney health.

When to see a Urologist/Nephrologist?

You should seek medical attention if you experience

  1. High blood pressure that does not respond to regular medication
  2. Signs of kidney damage, such as swelling, fatigue, or changes in urination
  3. A sudden increase in blood pressure with no known cause
  4. A history of kidney disease with worsening symptoms
