Nephrotic Syndrome

Nephrotic syndrome is a kidney related disorder that happens when the filtering units of the kidneys also known as glomeruli become damaged, leading to excessive protein loss in the urine (proteinuria). This condition results in low protein levels in the blood, swelling (edema), high cholesterol levels, and also an increased risk of infections and blood clots. It can affect both children and adults and may be caused by underlying kidney diseases, diabetes, infections, or autoimmune disorders.

Causes of Nephrotic Syndrome

Primary Causes (Kidney Diseases)

  1. Minimal change disease
  2. Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS)
  3. Membranous nephropathy.

Secondary Causes

  1. Diabetes
  2. Infections (HIV, hepatitis B/C)
  3. Certain medications.

Symptoms of Nephrotic Syndrome

  • Severe swelling (edema) in the legs, feet, hands, and around the eyes.
  • Foamy urine due to excess protein loss.
  • Weight gain from fluid retention.
  • Fatigue and loss of appetite

Why Choose Aster Hospitals?

At Aster Hospitals, our experienced nephrologists and urologists provide comprehensive care for nephrotic syndrome, focusing on accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. We use advanced tests, including blood tests, urine analysis, and kidney biopsies, to determine the cause of the condition.

Based on the diagnosis, we offer personalized treatment plans, which may include medications like steroids, diuretics, and blood pressure-lowering drugs to control symptoms. At Aster, we also provide dietary guidance, recommending a low-sodium, high-protein diet to manage swelling and protect kidney function. Additionally, our doctors offer lifestyle counseling, including weight management and infection prevention strategies. In serious cases, dialysis or kidney transplant may be necessary to restore kidney function. Our goal is to reduce complications, improve quality of life, and help patients manage their condition effectively under the supervision of a nephrologist.
