In a rare and remarkable medical achievement, Aster MIMS Calicut successfully performed North Kerala’s first Frozen Elephant Trunk surgery, one of the most complex procedures used to treat severe aortic diseases. The surgery was carried out on Abdul Salam, a native of Chathamangalam, who was in a critical condition due to a life-threatening aortic aneurysm.
The Frozen Elephant Trunk procedure involves replacing the damaged portion of the aorta—the main artery supplying blood from the heart to the rest of the body—with an artificial graft. This highly intricate surgery requires temporarily stopping blood circulation to the heart and brain, making it extremely high-risk and demanding exceptional surgical precision.
The operation was led by Dr. Bijoy Jacob and supported by a multidisciplinary team including cardiology, vascular surgery, anesthesia, perfusion, and nursing teams. Despite the challenges, the surgery was successfully completed, and the patient has recovered well.
This milestone further reinforces Aster MIMS Calicut’s position as a leading centre for advanced cardiac and aortic surgeries in the region.
