Regenerative Therapy

Regenerative therapy includes selected injection-based treatments for certain tendon, ligament, and joint conditions. Patients may ask about these options when pain continues despite rest, medication, activity modification, and exercise-based treatment.

The decision to use regenerative treatment depends on the patient’s diagnosis, symptoms, examination findings, imaging, age, physical activity, and previous response to treatment. Results vary between individuals, and these procedures are not appropriate for every condition.

Why and when it is recommended

Regenerative therapy may be discussed for certain long-standing tendon injuries, early or moderate osteoarthritis, selected ligament problems, and conditions that have not improved sufficiently with conservative care. It may also be considered by patients who want to explore options before deciding on surgery.

A proper diagnosis is important because pain may result from several different causes. A treatment designed for a tendon problem may not help advanced joint damage, severe instability, infection, or pain caused by another condition.

The doctor discusses expected results honestly and explains that improvement may take time. In some cases, rehabilitation remains an important part of recovery even after an injection.

Treatment

Treatment options may include platelet-rich plasma, commonly called PRP, viscosupplementation, and prolotherapy. PRP uses a concentrated portion of the patient’s own blood and may be injected into a selected tendon, ligament, or joint-related area.

Viscosupplementation may be considered for some patients with painful arthritis. Prolotherapy uses an injection-based method intended to stimulate a healing response in selected tissues.

Before treatment, the doctor explains preparation, the injection procedure, possible discomfort, activity restrictions, and warning signs that require medical attention. Patients may need to adjust certain medicines or activities before and after treatment.

Recovery and follow-up

Improvement is usually gradual and may take several weeks or months. Patients may receive instructions about walking, lifting, sports, exercise, and physiotherapy during recovery. A period of modified activity may be recommended while the treated area settles.

Follow-up visits help assess pain, movement, strength, and function. The treatment plan may include additional rehabilitation or another procedure only when required. The goal is to help patients return to useful activity while managing expectations about the healing process.
