International Women’s Day 2026 - “Give to Gain: Prioritizing Women’s Health”

by Dr. Nandita Paranjape Joshi

Every year on International Women's Day, celebrated on 8th March, we honor the strength, achievements, and invaluable contributions of women in society. Women play multiple roles—as daughters, mothers, professionals, and caregivers—often balancing responsibilities at home and work. While caring for others, many women tend to overlook one important aspect of their lives: their own health.

As a gynecologist, I often see women delaying medical consultations due to busy schedules, family priorities, or hesitation in discussing health concerns. However, maintaining good health is essential not only for women themselves but also for the well-being of their families and communities.

Theme of the Year: “Give to Gain”

The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day, “Give to Gain,” highlights an important message: when we invest in women’s health and well-being, the benefits extend to the entire society. By giving women access to healthcare, awareness, and preventive services, we gain healthier families, stronger communities, and a better future for the next generation.

Importance of Women’s Health Awareness

Women’s health is not limited to reproductive care. It includes physical, emotional, and hormonal well-being at every stage of life—from adolescence to menopause. Many health conditions affecting women develop gradually and may not show symptoms in the early stages, making regular health check-ups and preventive screening extremely important.

Some common health concerns that require attention include:

Ovarian Dysfunction Disorders (PCOS, Premature Ovarian Failure, Low Ovarian Reserve): These conditions can lead to irregular menstrual cycles, hormonal imbalance, fertility challenges, and long-term metabolic concerns if not addressed early.

Anemia: One of the most common health problems among women in India, caused by iron deficiency and leading to fatigue, weakness, and reduced immunity.

Cervical Cancer: A preventable disease if detected early through regular screening and HPV vaccination.

Breast Cancer: Early detection through breast self-examination and screening significantly improves survival rates.

Menstrual Disorders: Conditions such as irregular periods, heavy bleeding, or severe menstrual pain should never be ignored and require medical evaluation.

Perimenopausal Health – A Neglected Phase

Another important but often neglected phase in a woman’s life is perimenopause. This period usually ranges from three to six years before the actual onset of menopause and is marked by hormonal fluctuations that may lead to irregular cycles, mood changes, sleep disturbances, and metabolic changes.

Unfortunately, this stage is frequently overlooked, even though it plays a crucial role in determining a woman’s long-term health. Proper attention during this phase can help prevent several future health problems.

Women in the perimenopausal phase should focus on:

Balanced nutrition, especially adequate calcium, protein, and micronutrients
Mental health and emotional well-being
Regular strength training and physical activity

These measures can significantly reduce the risk of low bone density, dementia, diabetes, and cardiovascular disorders later in life.

Taking Care at Every Stage of Life

Women experience different health needs at different stages of life. During adolescence, awareness about menstrual health and proper nutrition is essential. In the reproductive years, regular gynecological consultations, family planning guidance, and cervical cancer screening play an important role. Pregnancy requires proper antenatal care to ensure the health of both mother and baby. Later in life, menopause brings hormonal changes that require attention to bone health, heart health, and overall well-being.

Preventive Care is the Key

Simple preventive steps can help women maintain good health:

• Regular gynecological check-ups
• Monthly breast self-examination
• Balanced and nutritious diet
• Regular physical activity
• Stress management and mental health care
• Timely health screenings and vaccinations

Conclusion

On this International Women’s Day, let us remind every woman that taking care of her health is not a choice but a responsibility. When women prioritize their health, they empower themselves and strengthen the families and communities around them.

The message of “Give to Gain” encourages us to give attention to women’s health, spread awareness, and support preventive care. By doing so, we gain a healthier and stronger society.

Remember: A healthy woman builds a healthy family and a better future for all.
