On 24th April 2026, a 24-year-old woman gave a new lease of life to others through the noble gift of eye and organ donation after battling a severe viral infection for over a month. Her corneas were retrieved by the Eye Bank at Aster Aadhar Hospital, Kolhapur, and preserved for transplantation, offering hope to patients awaiting vision-restoring surgery.
One recipient, a 55-year-old man suffering from a dense corneal scar following a viral corneal ulcer, had vision limited to hand movements close to his face. After a successful corneal transplant, he was able to see up to six metres on the very first day after surgery, marking a significant step toward regaining his sight and independence.
The second recipient, a 45-year-old woman with a painful, non-healing amoebic corneal ulcer, benefited immensely from the transplant. The donated cornea relieved her pain, saved her affected eye, and enabled her to see up to three metres on the first day after surgery.
Corneal blindness affects thousands of people and can severely impact daily life, limiting an individual’s ability to work, travel independently, and perform routine activities. For many such patients, corneal transplantation remains the most effective treatment to restore vision and improve quality of life.
