The Centre of Excellence in Oncology, Aster Medcity, in association with the NSS Unit of St. Teresa’s College, Ernakulam, conducted a Talkathon on Cancer to commemorate the World Cancer Day on 4th February. The event, which was held at St. Teresa’s College Auditorium, featured talks on detection, treatment and prevention of cancer by leading Oncologists and a dazzling fashion show “Kinitra” by women who successfully won the battle against cancer.
The Talkathon was the based on the international World Cancer Day theme “I am & I will”, which is an empowering call-to-action urging people to make a personal commitment to reduce the impact of cancer on themselves, the people they love and the world. This three-year campaign by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) aims to minimise the global burden of cancer by working together as one to create maximum awareness on early detection, timely treatment and effective prevention of cancer.
The Chief Guest at the event, Mr. David Lee - Marquee Player, Kochi Blue Spikers and Member, United States Men’s National Volleyball Team, said that one can beat cancer with singular focus, self-discipline and lots of positivity, just like sports.
The Talkathon was led by Dr. Jem Kalathil, Lead Senior Consultant – Surgical Oncology & Director – Aster Centre for Clinical Research and Dr. Arun Warrier – Consultant, Medical Oncology, Aster Centre of Excellence in Oncology.
The expert panel of Oncologists including Dr. Ramaswamy N V, Senior Consultant - Hematology and Hemato Oncology; Dr. Mayuri Rajapurkar, Consultant - Head & Neck Surgery; Dr Durgapoorna , Consultant - Radiation Oncology and Dr. Sharath S, Senior Specialist - Surgical Oncology spoke about the need to lead a healthy, active lifestyle to prevent cancers.
Commander (Retd.) Jelson A Kavalakkat, Chief Executive Officer, Aster Medcity and Dr. Sajimol Augustine M, Principal, St. Teresa’s College also spoke at the event, which was attended by people from all walks of life.
