FROM IDEAS TO ACTION

by Dr. Abdulla A

Young people have something incredibly valuable: the energy to act, the creativity to think differently, and the ability to influence the world around them. Positive change does not have to wait for the future—it can begin with the choices young people make today.

From adopting healthier habits to supporting others and using technology responsibly, simple actions can create a meaningful impact on individuals, families, and communities.

1. Begin With Yourself

Positive change starts with personal well-being. Taking care of your body and mind helps you stay energetic, confident, and prepared to make a difference.

Choose Nutritious Foods

A healthy diet provides the body with the nutrients it needs to grow, function, and stay active. Include plenty of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, protein-rich foods, and water in your daily routine. Try to reduce the intake of highly processed foods, excess sugar, and sugary beverages.

Keep Moving

Physical activity does not always mean spending hours at the gym. Walking, cycling, swimming, playing a sport, dancing, or doing strength-based exercises can all help keep the body active. Find an activity you enjoy and make movement part of your everyday life.

Make Sleep a Priority

Sleep plays an important role in physical health, concentration, emotional well-being, and immunity. Maintaining a regular sleep routine and getting adequate rest can help you feel more focused and energetic throughout the day.

Look After Your Mental Well-being

Mental health deserves the same attention as physical health. Make time for activities you enjoy, connect with people who support you, take breaks when needed, and find healthy ways to manage stress. Reaching out for professional or personal support when you are struggling is a responsible step toward better well-being.

2. Choose Habits That Protect Your Future

The habits developed during youth can influence health and well-being later in life. Making informed decisions today can help prevent many avoidable problems in the future.

Staying away from tobacco, alcohol, drugs, and other addictive substances is an important part of protecting both physical and mental health.

Young people may sometimes encounter pressure from friends or social circles to experiment with harmful substances. Having the confidence to say “No” and encouraging friends to make healthier choices can make a real difference.

Instead of treating substance use as someone else's problem, young people can become a source of awareness and support among their peers.

3. Turn Your Time and Talent Into Action

Young people have the ability to contribute to their communities in countless ways. Even without large resources or elaborate plans, there are many ways to make a difference.

You can:

  • Volunteer for local community initiatives.
  • Take part in environmental and cleanliness drives.
  • Support senior citizens or people who may need assistance.
  • Organise or participate in health-awareness programmes.
  • Donate books, clothes, or other useful items.
  • Help younger children through teaching or mentoring.
  • Participate in sports and recreational activities.
  • Use social media to promote useful, positive messages.

You don't need to do something extraordinary to create an impact. One positive action can encourage another person to do the same.

4. Make Technology Work for Good

Technology has become an important part of everyday life. When used thoughtfully, it can be more than a source of entertainment—it can become a platform for learning, awareness, and social impact.

Young people can use their digital skills to:

  • Create informative and educational content.
  • Encourage healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Promote community initiatives.
  • Raise awareness about meaningful causes.
  • Share credible and useful information.

However, digital well-being matters too. Spending excessive time online can affect sleep, physical activity, concentration, and real-world relationships. Maintaining a healthy balance between screen time, exercise, rest, and face-to-face interactions is essential.

5. Small Choices Can Create Bigger Change

Positive change does not always begin with a major campaign or large-scale initiative.

It could be choosing a nutritious meal, going for a walk instead of staying inactive, refusing an addictive substance, helping someone who needs support, volunteering in the community, or sharing useful information with others.

Each action may appear small on its own. But when many people make positive choices consistently, those individual efforts can contribute to a healthier, more supportive, and responsible society.

Start Today

Young people do not have to wait for the perfect opportunity to make a difference.

Ask yourself:

“What positive change can I make today?”

Young people can play an important role in building a healthier and more active society by making positive choices every day. Taking care of physical and mental well-being, staying active, preventing lifestyle-related health problems, and supporting others can have a lasting impact.

For those living with physical disabilities, mobility challenges, pain, or difficulties with movement, timely support and rehabilitation can help improve independence and quality of life. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) focuses on restoring function, improving mobility, managing pain, and helping individuals return to their daily activities with greater confidence.

With the right habits, awareness, and access to rehabilitation and physical medicine services, young people can take meaningful steps toward better health and a more active future.
