Successful Emergency Removal of Open Safety Pin from 1-Year-Old Child at Aster MIMS Hospital

Kottakkal, Malappuram | March 2, 2026

A 1-year-old male child was brought to the Emergency Department of Aster MIMS Hospital, Kottakkal, on 02/03/2026 at 10:10 AM with an alleged history of accidental ingestion of an open safety pin.

At the time of presentation, the child was clinically stable with no history of vomiting, breathing difficulty, hematemesis, or persistent cough. However, ingestion of a sharp object such as an open safety pin poses a significant risk of internal injury and is considered a medical emergency.

Immediate Assessment and Diagnosis

The Emergency team conducted a prompt clinical evaluation followed by appropriate imaging studies, which confirmed the presence of the open safety pin just below the oropharynx. Given the potential risk of perforation, internal bleeding, infection, or airway compromise, the case was managed on an urgent basis.

Emergency Intervention

Under the leadership of Dr. Anitha T V, HOD & Senior Consultant – ENT Surgeon, the Emergency and ENT teams proceeded with careful removal of the foreign body.

The open safety pin was successfully retrieved with utmost precision and caution, without any complications. Post-procedure monitoring was carried out, and the child remained stable throughout observation.

Advisory for Parents

Accidental ingestion of sharp or hazardous objects such as safety pins, needles, coins, and button batteries can lead to serious complications. Immediate medical evaluation is essential if foreign body ingestion is suspected, even in the absence of symptoms.

Warning signs to watch for include:

  • Excessive drooling
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Vomiting
  • Blood in vomit or stools
  • Persistent cough
  • Breathing difficulty
  • Unusual irritability

This case highlights the hospital’s prompt emergency response and multidisciplinary coordination in managing pediatric emergencies safely and effectively.
