Aster MIMS Mother Hospital, Areekode, has successfully performed an advanced Indwelling Pleural Catheter (IPC) procedure for a 65-year-old woman experiencing recurrent fluid accumulation around the lungs due to breast cancer.

The patient, a native of Areekode, had been experiencing persistent fluid buildup in the pleural space, the area surrounding the lungs. This condition can cause breathing difficulties, discomfort, chest pain and a significant impact on daily activities and quality of life.

An Indwelling Pleural Catheter (IPC) is a soft, flexible tube inserted into the pleural space to drain excess fluid from around the lungs. The procedure offers a practical option for managing recurrent fluid accumulation, allowing patients and caregivers to drain the fluid at home under appropriate medical guidance. This can help reduce the need for repeated hospital visits and support ongoing symptom management.

The procedure was successfully performed by a medical team led by Dr. Joel Andrews from the Department of Pulmonology at Aster MIMS Mother Hospital, Areekode.

Dr. Joel Andrews highlighted the role of IPC in managing recurrent pleural fluid accumulation, particularly in patients with advanced underlying conditions. By facilitating regular drainage and helping relieve symptoms, the procedure can improve patient comfort and support continuity of further treatment, depending on the patient's clinical condition.
