Dengue Fever: When to worry about low platelets?

by Dr. Pooja Murthy

Dr. Pooja Murthy, Consultant - Critical Care Medicine at Aster Whitefield Hospital offers insights into dengue fever and its symptoms.  Dengue Fever is a common infection in tropical countries. Dengue fever can cause mild symptoms like fever and body ache that subside within a few days. However, in some cases, Dengue fever can lead to severe complications including low platelets, bleeding manifestations, organ failures and even death.

Dr. Pooja also talks about how low platelets are common with Dengue fever. But doctors are only concerned about low platelets if they are associated with bleeding or if they are very low (less than 10,000). Patients with Dengue fever should not panic about low platelets but should seek medical attention to monitor their condition. Only if there is a tendency to bleed, will the patient need a transfusion.
