LIVING BEYOND THE PAIN - INTRODUCING OUR CANCER PAIN CLINIC

by Dr. Madhavi Thuyamani

“Doctor, I can accept the treatment . I just can’t bear this pain anymore.”

Doctors hear words like these more often than you might think. And behind the patient, there is almost always a family sitting quietly nearby. They don’t complain. They simply carry it, together.

If this sounds like your home, this blog is for you.

What Is a Cancer Pain Clinic?

A cancer pain clinic is a caring space where holistic principles are practiced  making sure that no person with cancer has to live in pain.

It is not a replacement for your cancer treatment. Your oncologist continues to fight the disease. The pain clinic works alongside that treatment and focuses on how you are symptom free with least effect on activities of daily living during the treatment.

At our clinic, you are cared for by a multidisciplinary team of pain specialists, specialty care nurses, psychologists, and physiotherapists, all working together to ease not just your pain, but the social , psycological or spiritual distress that comes with cancer.

Why Is It Important?

Because pain is not just a symptom. It takes over a person’s whole life.

Pain that goes untreated can takes away a patients sleep , mobility , appetite and well being . It can make a person who loved to talk go quiet. It can turn a loving home into a place of worry, helplessness, and tears due to care givers distress .

It also affects how well a person can tolerate their cancer treatment. Someone exhausted by pain finds it harder to eat, to rest, to walk, and to hope.

And one thing is not said often enough: cancer pain can be managed well with reduced suffering . Every patient deserves a chance at that relief.

What Is the Need for It?

Too many families go through this alone, often without knowing that help exists. Here is what we see again and again:

“This is just part of cancer.”
Many patients and families believe pain is unavoidable and must simply be endured. It does not have to be.

“We don’t want to bother the doctor.”
Patients often hide their pain so they will not seem like a burden. Please don’t. Your comfort is as important as any scan or test result.

“Won’t the medicines become a habit?”
This fear keeps many people from getting the relief they need. When pain medicines are used under the care of trained doctors, with the right dose for the right reason, they are a safe and compassionate part of treatment. A pain specialist’s job is to use them carefully and wisely.

“We didn’t know where to go.”
Cancer hospitals focus, rightly, on treating the cancer. A pain clinic gives pain the focused attention it deserves, with specialists trained for exactly this.

Behind every one of these is a person who suffered longer than they needed to. That is why this clinic is needed.

How Will It Change Life for Patients and Families?

For patients:

  • Reduced pain , improved activities of Daily living
  • The strength to eat, to walk, socialize  and to do the small things that bring joy
  • Less fear and anxiety , hence reduced psycological distress
  • More dignity, and more of themselves back
  • Better sleep and more energy

For families:

  • The peace of knowing your loved one is comfortable
  • Guidance, so you know what to do and whom to call
  • Emotional support for the caregiver, who often forgets to care for themselves
  • More time for what matters most: conversations, togetherness, and memories

Comfort changes how every day feels, and these are days that matter more than any others.

What Do We Offer?

Every person’s pain is different, so we never hand out a standard plan. We begin by history taking , examination and induvidualised management plan based on mechanistic cause of pain. Here is what that can include.

Medicines, one careful step at a time

We follow a gentle, step-by-step approach to pain relief, often called the pain ladder. We start at the step that suits your pain and move up only if you need more relief.

Support for the mind

Pain is never only in the body. Fear of what lies ahead, sleepless nights, and the feeling of being a burden can all make pain feel heavier. Our psychologists offer counselling and psychotherapy to help patients cope with pain, anxiety, low mood, and the emotional weight of illness.

When medicines are not enough

Sometimes pain does not settle even with the right medicines and other conservative measures. For such patients, we offer interventional pain procedures, which target pain at its source so that relief can come with less reliance on medicines. These include:

These are done by trained specialists, with careful planning and monitoring. Many can be performed with minimal discomfort, and some patients feel meaningful relief within days.

You Are Not Alone

If you or someone you love is living with cancer pain, please do not wait for it to become unbearable. You do not need to be sure it is “bad enough.” If pain is troubling you, that is reason enough to come.
