When Every Minute Counts: What to Do After a Serious Accident

by Dr. Jaleel K K

Many of us assume an injury can wait until the patient reaches the hospital. However,in many cases happens in the first few minutes often decides how well a person recovers. Knowing what trauma is, what to do at the scene, and how proper trauma care works can make the difference between life and death.

What Is Trauma Care?

Trauma is a serious physical injury caused by an external force, such as a motor vehicle crash, a fall from height, a burn, or a injury at work. Trauma care is the complete chain of treatment that follows: first aid at the scene, ambulance transport, emergency care, surgery, intensive care, and rehabilitation.

It needs a team working together, including emergency doctors, surgeons, anaesthesiologists, Radiologists, nurses, and radiology and laboratory staff, all ready at any hour of the day.

Why the Golden Hour Matters

The golden hour is the first hour after a serious injury. Treatment started in this window gives the patient the best chance of survival and recovery. Heavy bleeding, breathing problems, and head injuries can worsen within minutes.

In a busy city where traffic is heavy and highways connect many towns, knowing in advance which hospital has proper emergency and trauma facilities saves precious time. Quick transport to the right hospital matters as much as first aid.

Common Injuries After an Accident

Some injuries are obvious, but others are hidden. Watch out for the following:

• Head injury: Vomiting, drowsiness, confusion, seizures, or loss of consciousness after a blow to the head need urgent attention.
• Spine injury: Neck or back pain, numbness, or weakness in the limbs. Moving the person wrongly can cause permanent damage.
• Internal bleeding: There may be no visible wound. Pale skin, dizziness, a fast pulse, and abdominal pain are warning signs.
• Fractures: Swelling, severe pain, and a limb that looks bent or out of shape.

First Aid for Accident Victims: What to Do

Bystanders are often the first responders. A few simple steps can protect the injured person until help arrives.

• Ensure safety first: Check for traffic, fire, or fuel leaks before going near the vehicle.
• Call 108: Ask for an ambulance and give the exact location.
• Do not move the person: Move them only if there is immediate danger.
• Control bleeding: Press firmly on the wound with a clean cloth. If it soaks through, add more cloth on top without removing the first.
• Leave the helmet on: Removing it incorrectly can worsen a spine injury.
• Keep the person warm and calm: Give no food or water, as surgery may be needed.

Mistakes to Avoid

Well-meaning actions can sometimes cause harm. Pulling a victim out of a vehicle roughly, carrying them in a private car without supporting the neck and back, giving water, or crowding around the person can all make the situation worse. If unsure, call for an ambulance and keep the person calm until trained help arrives.

When to Seek Emergency Care

Go to the nearest emergency department immediately if there is:

• Heavy bleeding that does not stop
• Loss of consciousness, repeated vomiting, or confusion after a head injury
• Difficulty breathing, or severe chest or abdominal pain after a fall or collision
• A suspected fracture, deformed limb, or severe burn

Do not wait for symptoms to settle, as some serious injuries show signs late.

How Can Road Accidents Be Prevented?

Most injuries can be avoided with simple, consistent habits.

• Wear a helmet: Every rider and pillion should wear one with the strap fastened.
• Use seat belts and child seats: Buckle up on every trip, however short.
• Never drink and drive: Alcohol slows reaction time and weakens judgement.
• Avoid phone use while driving: A few seconds of distraction is enough for a crash.
• Follow speed limits: Slow down on busy roads, especially near schools and hospitals.

Recovery and Rehabilitation

Treatment does not end at discharge. Many patients need physiotherapy, pain management, and regular follow-up for weeks or even months, along with exercises to rebuild strength, mobility, and confidence. Emotional recovery matters too, as anxiety and fear are common after an accident.

Counselling and family support help patients return to daily life. Family members can help by going along for follow-up visits, encouraging daily exercises, and watching for signs of low mood or poor sleep. Small, steady steps matter more than quick progress.

Trauma can happen to anyone, anywhere. If someone is injured in an accident, call 108 at once, give safe first aid, and take the person to the nearest hospital with emergency and trauma care. Saving the emergency number and learning basic first aid costs nothing and can save a life.

Act fast. Stay calm. Save a life.
