Hydrogen breath testing is a non-invasive medical procedure used to diagnose various gastrointestinal disorders, such as lactose intolerance, fructose malabsorption, and small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).
During the test, the patient drinks a solution containing a specific type of sugar, such as lactose or fructose. If the patient is unable to digest the sugar properly, it will ferment in the colon and produce hydrogen gas. The gas is then absorbed into the bloodstream and exhaled through the lungs.
