Pacemakers have been inserted for over the last 50 years in India for individuals with low pulse rate. Earlier pacemakers were just restoring the pulse rate but was not able to retain the heart function to the full extent. However, the technology has grown in leaps and bounds to make pacemakers more reliable, longer lasting and pacemakers are now even able to replicate the natural rhythm of the heart . One such technique is the “His Bundle pacing “. Aster Medcity had done this innovative pacing using the latest technology 1 year ago for the first time in Kerala and subsequently has done 10 more patients successfully.
Dr Pugazhendhi Vijayaraman, Regional Director of Cardiac Electrophysiology, Geisinger Medical Centre, Pennsylvania ,US has been the innovator of His Bundle pacing and he was responsible for bringing this promising technique to clinical practice. Aster Medcity conducted a workshop on His Bundle pacing on the 18th of January,2020 with Dr Vijayaraman as the lead faculty. Dr Vijayaman, along with the team of electrophysiologists and cardiologists at Aster Medcity, performed His Bundle pacing and a more advanced pacing technique called left bundle branch pacing in 3 patients successfully. In the scientific symposium that followed, eminent Cardiac Electrophysiologists from all over South India delivered lectures on various aspects of this therapy. Dr Ajit Kumar, Professor and Head of Sri Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences, Trivandrum, Dr Ramakrishna Pillai,Head of Cardiology, KIMS, Trivandrum, Dr K U Natrajan, Professor of Cardiology, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Dr Raja Selvaraj, Head of Cardiology, JIPMER, Pondicherry were the senior Electrophysiologists in this core group of 25 doctors who attended the workshop and symposium. Dr Anil Kumar, Lead Senior Consultant of Aster Cardiac Sciences at Aster Medcity, stated that the live case demonstrations, highly interactive sessions and deliberations with the innovator and expert in the field of His Bundle pacing, Dr Vijayaraman, will encourage doctors to adopt this technique for treating their patients. Dr Praveen Sreekumar, Cardiac Electrophysiologist at Aster Medcity, stated that His Bundle and Left bundle Branch pacing will be the standard of pacing therapy in the years to come. All participants at the workshop and symposium acknowledged the benefit of such focused meetings, which enhance the clinical care given to the patients.
