Aster Medcity Successfully Completed First Liver Transplant

​Kochi : Aster Medcity successfully completed its first liver transplant on 47-year old Rajkumar Khurana, a trader from Punjab. A team of doctors from the Aster Integrated Liver Care worked tirelessly for 8 hours and completed the procedure. This is the first liver transplant at Aster Medcity, Cochin.

Rajkumar Khurana owes his new lease of life to the noble act of the relatives of 67 year old K J James. A native of Paravur, who was hit by a speeding car at Thoppumpady, while on his way to cast his vote on November 5th. James, was brought into Aster Medcity’s Critical Care Unit, where he was treated for five days, before the doctors declared him brain dead on November 10th at 10:30pm.

The surgery began at 6 am the next day, and while his corneas were harvested and transported to a nearby hospital and the doctors at Aster Integrated Liver Care Center conducted the liver transplant surgery on the patient from Punjab.

Liver Transplant Surgeons Dr Mathew Jacob, Senior consultant along with Dr Rehan Saif ,Consultant conducted the transplant surgery. Speaking about the life-saving procedure, Dr Mathew Jacob said, “Government records show that about 60,000 people die in India due to liver failure every year. Which is why facilities like the one we have at Aster Medcity is key to every state in the country. This is the first liver transplant at Aster Medcity, and going forward I am confident that this department will be able to do exemplary work in this field. ”
