First Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery in Parkinson’s Disease in North Kerala
A patient suffering from Parkinson’s disease since 10 years gets relief, after undergoing Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery. A 75-year-old patient from Vadkkara underwent the Brain pacemaker- better known as Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery in Aster MIMS. This is the first Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery in North Kerala.
Dopamine functions as a neurotransmitter that controls the movements of the body. When the cells stop producing dopamine the brain leads to Parkinson’s disease. A drug is given to increase the level of Dopamine in the first stage. The patient who doesn’t react to the drugs undergoes the Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery.
The surgery is performed in two stages. In the first stage, two electrodes are placed deep in the brain. Later a pacemaker is placed in the chest muscles and it is connected with thin wires to the electrodes in the brain. The electric pulses from the chest are delivered to the brain tissue. And help to regulate brain activity which helps to stimulate dopamine.
