Aster MIMS achieves milestone with 500 th kidney transplant

Kozhikode, April , 2018: Aster MIMS, the NABH accredited 650-bed super-speciality hospital in North Kerala, today announced a landmark achievement with the 500th kidney transplant. The recipient of the 500th kidney transplant was a 13-year-old Muhammad Fahad suffering from end stage renal failure who received the lifesaving donation. The first kidney transplant at Aster MIMS was carried out in 2006 and since then 450 living donor and 50 cadaver donor transplants have been successfully carried out.

Announcing the milestone, Dr. Santy Sajan, CEO, Aster MIMS said, “This is not a milestone that can be counted just in numbers. 500 kidney transplants mean that 500 patients with end stage kidney disease have received a second lease of life at Aster MIMS. This in turn would not have been possible without the donors and their families who took this noble step. Among the pioneers in kidney transplant in Kerala, Aster MIMS received approval to perform kidney transplants in 2006. Since then, a multidisciplinary team of transplant surgeons, physicians, nurses, transplant coordinators and social workers work in close collaboration with the Kerala Network for Organ Sharing (KNOS) and the National Organ & Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) to help patients with end stage renal disease through kidney transplants enabling them to lead normal lives.

Aster MIMS also recently performed the first robotic renal transplant using the revolutionary da Vinci Robotic Surgical System. This allows the kidney transplant to be performed using minimally invasive surgery which is of immense benefit to the patient. Aster MIMS also have the facilities for ABO incompatible transplant and Laparoscopic Donor Nephrectomy.The kidney transplant team at Aster MIMS is led by Dr. Ravikumar Karunakaran, Senior Consultant and Head Urology, Dr. Abhay Anand, Dr Surdas R, Dr Jithin Lal, Consultants – Urology and includes Dr. Sajith Narayanan, Senior Consultant – Nephrology; Dr. Ismail NA and Dr. Feroz Aziz, Senior Consultants – Nephrology; Dr Benil Hafeeq, Consultant – Nephrology and Dr Kishore K, Dr Biju Shekhar- Anaesthetists.
