The new year 2017 brings hope to those suffering from backache or deformities of the back with the launch of the specialised Backache and Deformity Clinic at Aster MIMS Calicut. The specialised Backache and Deformity Clinic will function every Wednesday evening between 3 pm to 5 pm. Taking the multi-disciplinary approach, the Backache and Deformity Clinic will have the combined expertise of various departments led by the Orthopaedic and Spine Surgery department ably supported by Radiology, Physical Medicine and Pain Medicine.
Backache is today a common complaint due to sedentary lifestyle with incorrect posture like sitting long hours hunched over a computer at work and many other reasons. Backache can also be caused by a fall, or lifting something heavy that results in some injury to the ligaments or muscles of the spine. Backache can also result from bulging or ruptured spinal discs causing pressure on a nerve. Arthritis of the spine can also be a cause. Osteoporosis or reduced density of the bones of the spine can cause the vertebrae to become brittle and result in compression fractures causing pain. Spinal deformities with abnormal curvature of the spine like in the case of scoliosis can also lead to back pain.
