Aster MIMS ‘takes’ doctors to the operation theatre with unique Orthopaedic CME

Kochi:In a unique approach, Aster MIMS ‘took’ doctors attending an Orthopaedic continuing medical education (CME) program on Disc Diseases live to the operation theatre. Organised this Sunday by the Department of Orthopaedics, Aster MIMS, Calicut Orthopaedic Society and Kerala Orthopaedic Association, the CME had two spinal surgeries being live streamed to the gathered medical delegates in the Aster MIMS auditorium.

Dr. Tony Kavalakkat, President, Calicut Orthopaedic Society inauguratedthe CME by lighting the lamp. Others present for the inauguration included Dr. Rahul R Menon, CEO, Aster MIMS, Dr. Mahendra Varma, Sr. Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedician, Aster MIMS, Dr Suresh S Pillai, Senior Consultant Spine Surgeon, Aster MIMS, Dr.RadheshNambiar, Consultant Orthopaedician and Dr. Hamza P., Chief – Medical Services, Aster MIMS.

Dr. Suresh Pillai, Senior Consultant Spine Surgeon and Organising Secretary of the CME performed the surgeries. He said, ‘Two cases were taken up one after another – a Minimally Invasive Lumbar Discectomy and a Lumbar Canal Stenosis. These were showcased live to the doctors attending the CME in the Aster MIMS auditorium allowing them to see the surgical approach and methods followed and permitting the audience to discuss about the case while it was going on.’

Besides Dr. Suresh Pillai, the faculty for the CME included top surgeons and specialists from around the country includingDr. Surya Prakash Rao, Senior Consultant Spine Surgeon, Medciti and Maxcure Hospital, Hyderabad, Dr. KetanKhurjekar, Head of Department of Spine Surgery andDr. ShaileshHadgaonkar, Consultant Spine Surgeon from Sancheti Hospital, Pune;Dr. Ashok Ramakrishnan, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon from Thiruvanathapuram; Dr. Jim F Vellara, Orthopaedic Surgeon from Thrissur, Dr. Amir from Ernakulam, and Dr. Vinod Rajan from Calicut.The specialists spoke on various orthopaedic conditions like disc degeneration, disc prolapse, discal tear and their surgical treatments.
