Kozhikode: Aster MIMS today announced the launch of the latest da Vinci Robotic Surgical System, the first of its kind in North Kerala. The Robotic surgical system would be used across Urology, Gynaecology, Oncology, Gastrointestinal Surgery and Paediatric Surgery. The launch of this revolutionary system allows minimally invasive surgery which is of immense benefit to the patient.

Robotic or robot-assisted surgery allows the surgeons to perform complex procedures with more precision, flexibility and control than possible with conventional techniques. The benefits to the patient include less invasive procedures with fewer complications, less pain with minimal blood loss, smaller, less noticeable scars, and quicker healing and recovery with fewer days stay in the hospital.

Dr. Azad Moopen, Chairman and Managing Director, Aster DM Healthcare said, “We are pleased to offer the latest in robotic surgical system for the benefit of our patients. With our experienced senior surgeons trained in robotic surgery, patients can look forward to superior treatment solutions for their problems at an affordable cost. At Aster MIMS, we shall continue to bring the latest developments in medical science and technology to our patients.”

Surgical Robots combine the best of science, engineering and medicine and bring an added degree of safety to a surgical procedure. These systems gives a surgeon superior visualisation and allow meticulous dissection and precise suturing. It is 100% safe as the surgeon is completely in control of the system at all times.

The state-of-the-art da Vinci Robotic Surgical System allows the surgeon to use tiny robotic tools through a much smaller incision. Visual enhancements like infrared imaging give better visualisation, precision and control to the surgeon. The basic components of a robotic surgical system include a camera arm and mechanical arm with surgical instruments attached to them.

The da Vinci Surgical System consists of three components – the Vision System that includes the endoscope, the cameras and other equipment that produces a 3D image of the operating area; the Patient Side cart with the robotic arms; and finally the Surgeon Console which allows the surgeon to visualise the operating area and manipulate the robot’s surgical instruments. The surgeon uses hand movements and foot pedals to control the camera, adjust focus and move the robotic arms. The camera on the da Vinci Surgical System has a three dimensional lens system, which also allows the operating area to be magnified 10 to 15 times.

The da Vinci Robotic Surgical system allows smaller, delicate and complex procedures that would be impossible with traditional methods, which is very useful in oncology surgeries for removal of tumors. The robotic system helps in reaching organs and areas where human fingers can’t! The 3-dimensional, magnified HD view helps in preventing prevents collateral damage to healthy tissue. da Vinci systems are also equipped with a Firefly™ Fluorescence Imaging technology that helps to better identify the targeted anatomy.

At Aster MIMS, the option of Robotic surgery is available in the Urology, Gynaecology, Oncology,Gastrointestinal Surgery and Paediatric Surgery Departments.Dr. RavikumarKarunakaran, Senior Consultant and Head - Department of Urology, DrSurdas R, Consultant Urologist, Dr. AbhayAnand, Consultant Urologist, Dr SajeeshSahadevan, Senior Consultant and Head of Department of Gastro Surgery, Dr. Rajesh Nambiar, Senior Consultant, Gastro Surgery, Dr. Nazer T, Senior Consultant, Gynaecology, Dr. Salim V P, Consultant, Surgical Oncology and Dr. Abraham Mammen, Senior Consultant and Head - Department of Paediatric Surgery are the doctors who are trained in Robotic surgery.
