Plastic surgeons at Aster MIMS performed a rare surgery in which the chopped off palm of a lady was successfully replaced. 58-year-old Santha from Iiritty lost her palm in an accident occurred at her working place.
On January 12th, Santha, who was working with a coconut oil factory, lost her palm when she put her hand into a Copra cutting machine by accident. Her hand was cut into two at the wrist. Santh’s colleagues and friends wasted no time and rushed her to Aster MIMS along with the severed palm.
The plastic surgery team lead by Dr KS Krishnakumar, Senior Consultant and Head, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department, Aster MIMS successfully replaced the severed palm in a 7-hour long surgery. Santha left hospital after 12 days and now her hand has regained 80 percent of its functionality. With physiotherapy for the next two to three months, she will be able to regain full functionality of her hand.
Dr Krishnakumar, Senior Consultant and Head, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department, Aster MIMS said, “It was the presence of mind displayed by Santha’s colleagues to bring the cut off palm in a bag of ice along with the patient was the crucial thing in this case”.
Besides Dr Krishnakumar, Dr Ajith Kumar Pati and Dr Saju Narayanan, Senior Consultants, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department, Aster MIMS, Dr Bibilash Babu and Dr Amrita Mandal, Consultants, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Department, Dr Suresh S Pillai, Dr Shamim and Dr Moidu Shamir, Orthopedics Department, Aster MIMS, Dr Kishore K and Dr Preetha Chandran Anaesthetists, Aster MIMS also took part in this surgery.
