The Child Development Centre at Aster Medcity is a dedicated clinic for differently abled children, providing customised treatment through early identification, intervention, school age and specialised services. The Emergency Department has an adjoining Radiology Suite equipped with MRI, Ultrasound, CT Scan and X-ray machine to save on time taken for moving patients to other units/departments for critical diagnostic procedures and fast-tracking the start of treatment.

The Emergency Department has a Triage Area, where an ACLS/ATLS/PALS Trained Nurse, follows a specialised Triage system and triages patients on the basis of how critical the illness or injury is. Triage or the first point of public contact with the Emergency Department, is done according to the Australasian Triage System, wherein patients are triaged into 5 categories. Triaging ensures that the most critically ill patient gets medical attention on priority, without delay.

For the convenience of families/bystanders of patients, there is a “Discussion Room” at the Emergency Department where Doctors, Nurses and Guest Relation Staff will provide updates on the current status and plan
of care of patients. The Guest Relation Officer will attend to all queries from the side of the family/ bystander regarding the condition of the patient and will also, on request, arrange meetings for them with the concerned Doctors.

The Emergency Department will have a dedicated Pharmacy that operates 24x7. Made for the convenience of the patient’s family/ bystanders, they do not require to move out of the ED or take the trouble of finding medicines for the patient at a time when every moment counts.

The GE SPECT-CT OPTIMA NM 640 gamma camera can provide exceptionally clear images at a very high speed, facilitating high-precision diagnosis. Low on radiation dose and examination time, it also allows hybrid by integrating the most advanced general purpose camera with a newly developed four-slice CT.

An advanced Digital Mammography system, it provides high-resolution 3D image results using X-rays for quick detection of even the tiniest calcified lesion that’s in the precancerous stage. The X-ray tubes move in an arc, capturing 11 images in 7 seconds and these images are assembled in the computer to create highly focused 3D image throughout the breast, facilitating easier diagnosis.

The Emergency Department has a separate Emergency Acute Care Unit to monitor and treat very critically ill or injured adult patients. A 5-bed unit managed by a team of trained Emergency medicine professionals; the EACU is built adjacent to the ED to facilitate easier treatment.

The Infectious Disease Screening Area at the Emergency Department is a special area for monitoring and treating patients with communicable disease. Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a heart defect that’s present at birth. When the condition is present, a vein that normally closes at birth (the ductus arteriosus) stays open. The result is that oxygen-rich blood that should be circulating into the body instead goes back to the lungs. Cardiac ductal ligation is a procedure to repair this problem.

High-frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV) is a lung-protective strategy that can be utilized in the full spectrum of patient populations ranging from neonatal to adults with acute lung injury.

Incubators and radiant warmers are used to maintain the body temperature of newborn infants. This is best done so that the energy expended for metabolic heat production is minimized.

These lights emit light at wavelengths that are most effectively absorbed by bilirubin and can be customized by using varying proportions of blue, blue-green and green lights. Whereas double volume exchange transfusion is replacing the baby's total blood volume twice, leaving the intravascular amount the same.

A partial exchange transfusion is a procedure performed to correct polycythaemia or severe anaemia without hypovolaemia. This can be performed using either the one catheter or two catheter push pull technique.

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is a means of providing respiratory support to neonates with either upper airway obstruction or respiratory failure. Respiratory failure constitutes either failure of ventilation or failure of lung function. 

Peritoneal dialysis is frequently required in NICU, and it is a fundamental, rational, safe and effective renal replacement therapy method in infants with Acute kidney injury and metabolic disorders.

Bedside echocardiography is often performed on our neonatal unit usually to diagnose or exclude a structural heart defect, but also to evaluate pulmonary haemodynamics and cardiac function. Cranial ultrasonography (cUS) is an excellent tool to detect the most frequently occurring brain abnormalities in preterm and full-term neonates, to study the evolution of lesions, and to follow brain maturation. X-ray examinations of the lungs is an important element in the evaluation of the neonates and their respiratory function. It is often necessary to perform a large number of X-ray examinations depending upon the infant's birthweight, gestational age and respiratory problems.

A central venous line is most often put in when a baby cannot get a percutaneous inserted central catheter (PICC) or midline central catheter (MCC). A central venous line can be used to give nutrients or medicines to a baby. It is only put in when babies need IV nutrients or medicines for a long time. Whereas peripheral arterial access readily allows sampling of arterial blood for arterial blood gas analysis, haematology and biochemistry and can also be used for removal of blood during exchange transfusion.

The unit has an excellent blend of neonatologists trained in Canada, UK, and India. With this experience, the team has the ability to manage any extreme preterms (>350 gm and more than 22 weeks). The past experience data has shown excellent outcomes both short term and long term with the least mortality when compared to any top centres of the world.

The unit is equipped with SLE Inosys Nitric Oxide (NO) delivery and monitoring system, which delivers Nitric Oxide. This is an advanced therapy for the management of babies with severe pulmonary hypertension. This modality is useful in babies born with a congenital diaphragmatic hernia and in those with severe meconium aspiration syndrome.

The unit is also unit is equipped with SLE6000 ventilators, the most advanced ventilators available so far. It provides invasive and non-invasive ventilation. The unit also provides advanced ventilation in the form of Nasal Intermittent Positive Pressure Ventilation (NIPPV), and High-Frequency Oscillatory Ventilation (HFOV).

The unit offers newborn resuscitation corners in the labour rooms and maternal OTs. The arrangement can also handle twin deliveries. These stations have inbuilt T-piece devices, air oxygen blenders, suction apparatus and timers.

Only a few NICUs in India is equipped with facilities like Amplitude integrated EEG, that is used to monitor subclinical seizures in cooled and seizure babies. It also helps the team to predict neurodevelopmental outcomes in birth asphyxia babies.

The NICU has a servo-controlled machine that enables the doctors to treat babies born with birth asphyxia. With this equipment, the temperature is reduced to 33.5°C and can be maintained at that level for 3 days. This treatment has been shown to significantly improve the outcomes in babies.

The team performs 2D echocardiograms, cranial and lung ultra-sonograms using the bedside sonogram machine. This is used to treat patients with PDA, PPHN, shock, IVH, PVL, air leak etc.

To maintain highly sterile conditions, the NICU is equipped with laminar flow hood for fluid preparation and TPN preparation. This keeps infection rates to minimum.

Aster Women and Children's Neonatal Transport Service is highly equipped with the intensive-care environment, it provides swift service for newborns in need of specialised critical care services. It is operated by a multidisciplinary team of experts who involve the usage of advanced technology.

On the arrival of Neonatal Transport Ambulance to Aster Women and Children hospital, the newborns are shifted to the Level 3B NICU where infants are put under the treatment curated by a highly trained team of Neonatologists.

The Neonatal Transport Service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

An EEG records the electrical activity of your brain via electrodes affixed to your scalp. EEG results show changes in brain activity that may be useful in diagnosing brain conditions, especially epilepsy and other seizure disorders.

A video EEG records what is happening when you have a seizure or event and compare the picture to what the EEG records at the same time.

Invasive EEG recordings are those recordings that are made with electrodes that have been surgically implanted on the surface or within the depth of the brain.

This is a procedure used intraoperatively to confirm the location and extent of epileptic tissue by recording electrical activity directly from the surface of the cerebral cortex.

MRI protocol for epilepsy is a group of MRI sequences put together to improve sensitivity and specificity in identifying possible structural abnormalities that underlie seizure disorders.

Cystoscopy is an important procedure used by our urology team to diagnose and treat a variety of urinary tract problems. It involves passing a thin, lighted instrument into the urethra and bladder and is generally performed in an outpatient setting. Cystoscopy is a medical procedure used in urology to look inside the urinary tract. The cystoscope can magnify the bladder and urethral lining, allowing the doctor to detect any abnormalities.

During a cystoscopy, the doctor may take biopsies of abnormal-looking tissue, remove stones, or insert a stent to keep the urethra open. The procedure is generally performed in an outpatient setting and takes anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes.

Cystoscopy can be used to diagnose various conditions such as bladder stones, urinary tract infections, and tumors. It can also be used to perform procedures such as cystolithotripsy, which involves the use of a laser to break up bladder stones so that they can be easily passed out of the body.

A cystoscopy can be used to diagnose and treat a variety of urinary tract problems, including urinary tract infections, bladder and kidney stones, and tumors. It may also be used to identify the cause of recurrent urinary tract infections, blood in the urine, or difficulty urinating.

Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP): This is a procedure used to treat an enlarged prostate by removing tissue from the prostate through the urethra using a tool inserted through a cystoscope.

Transurethral bladder tumor resection (TURBT): This is a procedure used to remove tumors from the bladder through the urethra using a tool inserted through a cystoscope. This procedure is used to diagnose and treat bladder cancer, as well as other diseases of the urinary tract. It involves cutting out the tumor using a tool while the patient is under anesthesia, and can be used to treat early-stage bladder cancer.

Laser Lithotripsy: This procedure involves the use of a laser to break up kidney stones into small pieces that can be easily passed out of the body through urine.

Lithotripsy has a high success rate in breaking up kidney stones and ureteral stones, making it an effective treatment option for these conditions. Lithotripsy is a safe and effective treatment option for kidney stones, bladder stones, or ureteral stones, and offers many advantages over traditional surgical methods.

TRUS stands for Transrectal Ultrasound, and it is a type of imaging technique that is commonly used by our urologists to visualize the prostate gland. A TRUS-guided biopsy is a procedure that involves taking small samples of tissue from the prostate gland using a biopsy needle under the guidance of transrectal ultrasound.

The procedure is usually performed in an outpatient setting and typically takes around 30-45 minutes to complete. Before the procedure, the patient is usually given a mild sedative to help them relax and reduce any discomfort they may experience during the procedure.

During the procedure, the patient lies on their side, and a lubricated ultrasound probe is inserted into the rectum. The probe emits sound waves that bounce off the prostate gland, creating a real-time image of the gland on a monitor. The urologist uses this image to guide a biopsy needle to the areas of the prostate gland where abnormalities are detected.

The biopsy needle is inserted through the rectal wall and into the prostate gland, where it takes small samples of tissue. The number of tissue samples taken varies depending on the size and location of the abnormalities detected. Typically, 10-12 samples are taken.

After the procedure, the patient may experience some mild discomfort and bleeding from the rectum, but this usually resolves within a few days. Results from the biopsy are usually available within a few days to a week, and the urologist will discuss the results with the patient and recommend further treatment if necessary.

MR-TRUS (Magnetic Resonance-Transrectal Ultrasound) guided biopsy of the prostate is a type of diagnostic procedure used by our doctors to detect and diagnose prostate cancer. It combines the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) to guide the biopsy needle precisely to the suspicious areas of the prostate gland.

During the procedure, the patient is placed in an MRI scanner, and images are taken of the prostate gland. The MRI images are then used to create a 3D map of the prostate, which helps the urologist identify the suspicious areas for biopsy. The patient is then moved to a TRUS machine, and a probe is inserted into the rectum. The TRUS machine uses sound waves to create images of the prostate gland, and the 3D map created from the MRI images is overlaid onto the TRUS images to guide the biopsy needle precisely to the suspicious areas.

The combination of MRI and TRUS allows for more accurate identification of suspicious areas within the prostate gland. The 3D map created from the MRI images helps to guide the biopsy needle more precisely to the suspicious areas of the prostate, increasing the chances of detecting cancer. The use of MRI imaging can help to identify areas of the prostate that are more likely to cause complications during biopsy, such as bleeding or infection. This information can be used to avoid these areas during the biopsy procedure.

It allows direct visualization and sampling of tissues (biopsies) for further analysis. This involves examining the large intestine for abnormalities like hemorrhoids (Piles), anal fissures, polyps, inflammatory bowel diseases (Ulcerative colitis, and Crohn’s), intestinal tuberculosis, cancer, etc. A colonoscopy also allows for the biopsy or removal of suspicious lesions and is a crucial tool in colon cancer screening and prevention.

It is a non-invasive procedure that involves swallowing a small capsule containing a camera to capture images of your digestive tract, particularly the small intestine. It's typically used to diagnose lesions located in the small intestine that are not accessible to conventional endoscopy. This procedure is beneficial because it does not require surgery or anesthesia, and it is a less invasive way to diagnose diseases and abnormalities of the digestive tract. Furthermore, the images captured by the camera allow for a more accurate diagnosis.

ERCP combines endoscopy with fluoroscopy to diagnose and treat disorders of the bile ducts and pancreas including bile duct stones, strictures (Narrowing), leaks, and cancer. It involves the insertion of an endoscope through the mouth, passing through the stomach and duodenum to access the bile ducts and pancreatic ducts. ERCP is used to remove obstructions and perform interventions such as stent placement or tissue sampling in cases of biliary or pancreatic diseases.

This diagnostic procedure combines endoscopy and ultrasound to obtain detailed images and information about the digestive tract and the surrounding tissue and organs. It involves the insertion of an endoscope equipped with an ultrasound probe through the mouth or rectum, providing high-resolution images of the digestive tract wall layers and surrounding structures. The FibroScan procedure involves the use of a specialized ultrasound probe to measure liver stiffness. The patient lies on a table, and the probe is placed on the skin surface over the liver. The probe sends a vibration through the liver, and the resulting shear wave speed is measured. Supplementary oxygen
